Every cracked driveway raises the same question: fix it or start over? Repairs cost a fraction of replacement — but only when repair is actually viable. Paying for repairs on a slab that needed replacement is the most expensive option of all, because you pay twice. Here's how to think about it honestly.
When Repair Is the Right Call
Hairline and minor cracks. Small, stable cracks are normal concrete behavior, especially in our climate. Cleaning, sealing, and filling them with freeze-thaw-rated materials stops water intrusion and keeps them from growing through winter. This is routine maintenance, not a major project.
Surface wear and mild spalling. If the slab is structurally sound but the surface is worn, stained, or lightly damaged by salt, resurfacing with a bonded overlay gives it a fresh, clean top layer at a fraction of replacement cost. The key condition: the slab underneath must be stable. An overlay on a moving slab just hides the problem temporarily.
Localized settlement. One corner sunk, one section sitting low, a walkway panel dropped an inch? Slab leveling can lift a sound slab back to grade without tear-out. It's the right tool for settlement — not for structural failure, which is a different problem.
Isolated damage. A single badly damaged section can sometimes be removed and replaced while the rest of the driveway stays — but only if the remaining concrete is genuinely in good shape. We'll tell you straight whether partial replacement makes sense or the whole slab is telling the same story.
When Replacement Is the Honest Answer
Severe heaving. If freeze-thaw cycles have pushed large sections up unevenly, the base has failed — and leveling or patching won't hold. The foundation needs to be rebuilt.
Widespread structural cracking. A slab broken into shifting, rocking pieces isn't a patching candidate. Filling those cracks is cosmetic; the slab has failed structurally.
Failed base across the whole area. When the problem is underneath the entire driveway — soft soil, no base, chronic water — surface fixes just delay the inevitable. Replacement is the chance to build the base correctly from scratch.
Drainage that can't be fixed around the slab. If water has nowhere to go with the current grade and layout, replacement lets you rebuild grade, drainage, and the slab as one engineered system.
The Cost Question, Honestly
Repairs typically run a fraction of full replacement cost — which is exactly why it's worth finding out whether repair is viable before assuming the worst. But here's the trap: a cheap repair on a failed slab isn't savings, it's a down payment on the replacement you'll still need. The assessment matters more than any price quote. Get the diagnosis right first; the math follows.
How a Professional Assessment Should Work
A proper assessment isn't a glance from the truck window. It means walking the full driveway, reading the crack patterns (they tell a story about what's happening underneath), checking for settlement and heaving, evaluating surface condition, and understanding how water moves across and under the slab. Then — and only then — a recommendation: repair, resurface, level, or replace, with a written quote for the recommended work and an explanation you can understand.
Red Flags When Getting Quotes
A contractor who quotes replacement without explaining why. If they can't show you the failure — the heaving, the base problem, the structural cracking — be skeptical of the recommendation.
A contractor who promises repairs will last on a clearly failed slab. Same skepticism, opposite direction. Ask what happens when the underlying problem continues.
Pressure to decide on the spot. A driveway is a decades-long investment and a major expense. Any honest contractor gives you a written estimate and time to think. "This price is only good today" is a sales tactic, not a fact about concrete.
No mention of the base. Whether they're quoting repair or replacement, a contractor who never talks about what's under the slab isn't diagnosing — they're guessing.
